Native New Zealand forest covered with mist
Forestry greenhouse gas emissions
  • Greenhouse gases (GHG’s) are absorbed (sequested) and released (emissions) in the forestry lifecycle in different ways via various chemical compounds.

The dataset - what is it?

GHG’s are caused by several different compounds beyond CO2. The data set breaks down all GHG’s into different compounds, the forestry operation that causes the compound, and the amount of compound involved. Each process is shown if it contributes to the Paris Agreement, New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (NZETS), and He Waka Eke Noa.

    Why it's important

The decision to establish forestry and the management of that forest influence the GHG’s. The New Zealand Emissions Trading scheme only offers a simplified view of carbon sequestration and emissions. If the forest owner has goals to reach ‘carbon neutral’ or a have a better understanding of their exact carbon footprint a more detailed approach is required. The Paris Agreement and He Waka Eke Noa cover more detail. The dataset offers a comprehensive scope of GHG, i.e. such CH4 uptake by microorganisms in the forest soils.

        Caveats

Forest sequestration rates based on the ETS Standard tables are accurate for operational use for forest owners with less than 100 ha in terms of NZU rewards, though not necessarily in terms of actual sequestration achieved. Other estimates are provided to give a sense of their likely order of magnitude, but may differ by species and site.
